Brenna Tomas

Artist member since 2019
Sault Ste Marie, ON

Brenna Tomas is an interdisciplinary female artist, recreation therapist, writer and mother born and raised in Bawating, the Robinson-Huron treaty territory of Ontario, Canada, now called Sault Ste Marie. She graduated with a diploma in Recreation Therapy from Canadore College in 2010, obtained her undergraduate degree with distinction in Art History and Studio Arts at Concordia University in the Spring of 2020 and is completed her Masters degree in Education at the University of Ottawa in the Summer of 2022. Her work is an interplay between what can be seen and what cannot be seen. Performative in nature, her work questions the nature of perspective, context and bias in the realm of representation. Intrigued by the value systems that impact the hierarchical status of one over another, she works to refute these assumptions in her work. Utilizing found imagery, time based performance and accessible materials, her work focuses on abstractions of landscapes of thought and experience, highlighting the way that the contradictory can become complimentary and confronting the viewer with the conceptual systems that complete the spaces in between when representation is in action.
